Better Jobs Ontario (formerly Second Career) 

​What is Better Jobs Ontario?

​

Better Jobs Ontario (BJO) is a Government of Ontario program that provides financial support of up to $28,000 to support unemployed individuals in need of skills training to help find employment in high-demand occupations in Ontario.

 

Qualified candidates may be eligible to receive financial help to pay for:

  • Tuition

  • Books, manuals, workbooks, uniforms or other instructional costs

  • Transportation costs

  • A basic living allowance

  • Child care costs (if applicable)

  • Disability supports (if applicable)

 

How do I qualify for Better Jobs Ontario?

​

You may be eligible to apply to Better Jobs Ontario if you either:

 

  • Have been laid-off and are currently unemployed (or are working a temporary job just to cover costs)

​​

OR

 

  • Have not been laid-off but have been unemployed for six months or longer and are part of a low-income household

 

AND

 

  • Are a resident of Ontario

 

  • Are Canadian citizen or permanent resident or meet the 900-series Social Insurance Number (SIN) policy

 

  • Are choosing to retrain for a career that is in demand in Ontario

 

​Several factors are considered when deciding who will receive Better Jobs Ontario funding such as:  

  • How long you have been actively looking for work

  • Length of time you have been unemployed

  • Your education background

  • Your work history and occupational skills that were required in your past jobs

  • Labour market prospects of your current occupation and the occupation you wish to pursue

  • The type of training you wish to pursue

How do I apply for Better Jobs Ontario?

​

Contact our centre to speak to an Employment Consultant who will conduct an initial assessment and then will provide you with more information about the Better Jobs Ontario program. If you are eligible and suitable for Better Jobs Ontario, your Employment Consultant will assist you with the application and submit it to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development on your behalf.
